This is from Trevor Huffman’s THRIVE program — The Inner Basketball Athlete Collective.

I use different skill development practice plans based on level, but this can be used for any level, but is mostly for kids or youth players grades 5th-10th that need to develop their games instead of doing X’s and O’s.

Dynamic Warmup: Teach kids how to power skip. apple picker (skipping with same hand/same knee going up), Euro step jump and balance. defensive slide. slide and rip (give kid each a ball, and slide and rip the ball below their knees on every second slide). High knees/butt kicks. Half court and back.

Speed / Agility / Footwork / Dribbling: Speed Ladder up each sideline (lines start behind ladder) with cones at hashes, corner turn around cone dribble to elbow cone, combo move, then add different layups and finishes (X-out, jump stop, same leg same hand layup, floater, Jump stop floater, etc)

Shooting Pregame: Nash Form shooting (just shoot with ball on floor pick up and shoot in one motion with correct follow through), Nova shooting, Games on When to Shoot

A: 1v1 Coach Hughes Corner turn finishing with handoff — two lines on baseline, one with ball on left dribbles around coach or cone/ hands off to player and then they compete to score. Add shot blocking pads with coach in middle creating contact.

BC: Two ball alternating dribble gut buster in 35 seconds or less.

FT: 4 Free Throws / 1 Rep of Defensive Closeout per miss (sprint from baseline, chop feet at shooter to free throw line, slide back to corner of and over on baseline).

B: 1V1 Coach Z CUTTING — Two lines at slots offense touches block and defense other block v-cut out to wing. Play 1v1 on both sides, first player to 5 points (match up players based on skill/athleticism). Rules: Two dribble max. Make quick decisions, never hold ball. Defensive player must yell “shot box” on all shots and offensive player can get any offensive rebounds on make or miss which result in two pushups for defense.

BC: Two ball (1 ball weak hand modification for non-dribblers) alternating dribble gut buster in 35 seconds or less.

C: 1v1 Coach Z Dribble Drive slides/rises — Option 1: coach dribbles away (defensive player has to stay up line / helpside and offensive player rotates/cracks back for dribble drive. Option 2: coach dribbles down lane, player must fake help and get back to play 1v1. Rules: Two dribble max (third optional on change of direction that leads to direct score). Make quick decisions, never hold ball. Defensive player must yell “shot box” on all shots and offensive player can get any offensive rebounds (on make or miss) result in pushups for defense.

FT: 4 Free Throws / 1 Rep of Defensive Closeout per miss (sprint from baseline, chop feet at shooter to free throw line, slide back to corner of and over on baseline).

D: Coach Z 3-out dribble drive 2 pass 1v1 — Option 1 player drives rise or slide. follow your pass or refill. Second drive pass to close out. Bring first passer into to play lane defense for finishes. Rules: Two dribble max (third optional on change of direction that leads to direct score). Make quick decisions, never hold ball. Defensive player must yell “shot box” on all shots and offensive player can get any offensive rebounds (on make or miss) result in pushups for defense.

BC: 1v1 Full court 10 seconds or less. Cut the court in half with cones and make players stay on that half going both right side of court to start. Match up players based on skill/athleticism. Both sides start at same time attacking right column of court. If they don’t make it to hoop in ten, go to back of next line.

E: Skip Close out — One line with balls. Offensive player alone on other side. D player stays in lane and can’t leave until ball leaves player’s hands for skip and play. Scorer stays. Passer comes in on defense. Stop goes to offense. Rules: dTwo dribble max (third optional on change of direction that leads to direct score). Make quick decisions, never hold ball. Defensive player must yell “shot box” on all shots and offensive player can get any offensive rebounds (on make or miss) result in pushups for defense.
